Elegance and TECHNOLOGY
When Mercedes-Benz introduced the R129 in 1989, it was more than a new SL, it was a statement of engineering excellence. Designed by Bruno Sacco, the SL 500 combined sleek styling with groundbreaking technology: automatic roll-over bar, electrically operated soft-top, and an interior that exuded refined luxury. It quickly became a benchmark in grand touring.
Its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 delivered 320 hp (in post-1992 models), but more than figures, it offered effortless torque and a velvety driving experience. This was performance with poise, the quiet strength of Stuttgart.

A family STORY
This particular SL was first registered on February 1st, 1994, in Germany under the plate MZ-YD 44. It was later purchased on July 13th, 2000, and received its French registration 1116 ZL 67. That purchase left a lasting memory : “I was 6 years old when we test-drove it,” recalls the current owner. “My father was torn between this and a light blue 600 SL with more mileage, same price. He chose the 500, and I’m glad he did.”
Back then, the car had just 42,000 km. It changed hands again on March 16th, 2019, and today shows 126,000 km on the clock.

A long-lasting BOND
Over 12 years of ownership, the car has covered 45,000 km in the hands of its current owner. It’s driven almost every weekend, a ritual of calm and pleasure. “It’s such a relaxing car. You turn the key and it just goes, no stress, just torque and serenity.” Apart from occasionally temperamental distributors, it starts and runs like clockwork, a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s bulletproof engineering of the era.
Even more than 30 years after its debut, the R129 SL feels remarkably modern. The level of equipment, build quality, and drivability make it a prime candidate for the title of perfect modern classic. Whether for seasoned collectors or youngtimer enthusiasts, this car still has everything to charm.
