In 2027, Timeless Classics will shine a spotlight on one of the most recognisable, radical and influential automobiles in history: the Lamborghini Countach. Introduced in the early 1970s, the Countach did far more than simply succeed the Miura. It profoundly redefined the way a supercar could be designed, imagined and perceived. With its extreme proportions, wedge-shaped profile, mid-mounted V12 engine and iconic scissor doors, it imposed an entirely new vision of the dream car.
More than fifty years after its introduction, its silhouette has lost none of its impact. It belongs to that rare category of automobiles that transcend their era to become true cultural icons. It is precisely this ability to inspire generation after generation that Timeless Classics will celebrate in its 2027 edition.
A revolution in
AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN
When Lamborghini unveiled the LP500 prototype at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971, the contrast with the Miura was striking. Where the Miura embraced curves, softness and a certain sensuality, the Countach introduced a radically different visual architecture. Designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone, its exceptionally low profile, sharp lines and wedge-shaped silhouette made it look like an object from the future.
The Countach was not designed to reassure. It was designed to provoke. Its steeply raked windscreen, pronounced wheel arches and vertically opening doors quickly became inseparable from its identity. With the Countach, Lamborghini was not simply evolving the supercar: the company was helping to redefine its visual language for the decades to come.
Many sports cars would later adopt elements of its design vocabulary: a forward-set cabin, sharp lines, spectacular proportions and an unmistakable road presence. This is perhaps one of the Countach’s greatest achievements: more than half a century after it was created, its design remains instinctively associated with the very idea of a supercar.
More than a silhouette
AN EXPERIENCE
The Countach became an icon through its image. Posters, magazines, cinema and automotive photography turned it, for several generations, into the ultimate unattainable dream car.
But reducing the Countach to its appearance would mean overlooking a fundamental part of what makes it so special. Behind the wheel, the experience is intensely mechanical. The driver sits extremely low, surrounded by a compact machine, with the V12 positioned immediately behind the passenger compartment.
The steering, manual gearbox, pedals and controls demand genuine involvement, far removed from the isolation offered by a modern supercar. Every start-up, every gear change and every acceleration is a reminder that the Countach comes from an era when driving a car of this calibre meant actively participating in the experience.
That contrast is also what makes it so unique. Its shape could almost suggest a static object, a sculpture. Yet its personality takes on an entirely different dimension once it begins to move. A Countach is therefore not something to be experienced simply by looking at it. It must be heard, felt and driven.
A V12
AT THE HEART OF THE STORY
Beneath its spectacular design, the Countach remains deeply faithful to Lamborghini’s mechanical DNA. The first production LP400 was powered by the famous naturally aspirated V12 originally developed under the direction of Giotto Bizzarrini. With a displacement of 3.9 litres, the engine was mounted longitudinally behind the occupants in a particularly original configuration.
This arrangement helped optimise weight distribution while preserving the car’s relatively short wheelbase. The gearbox was positioned ahead of the engine, between the seats, while the driveshaft passed back through the engine sump towards the rear differential.
Throughout its career, the Countach evolved considerably. Its tracks became wider, its tyres more imposing, its bodywork increasingly aggressive and the displacement of its V12 progressively increased. LP400, LP400 S, LP500 S, 5000 Quattrovalvole and finally the 25th Anniversary: each version represents a distinct chapter in the Countach story.
Yet despite these transformations, the essence remained unchanged. A spectacular architecture, a naturally aspirated V12 and a deeply analogue driving experience that remain central to the character of the Countach today.

On 16 May 2027, the Lamborghini Countach will be more than simply the featured automobile of Timeless Classics. It will embody everything the event has sought to celebrate since its creation: exceptional cars that defined their era, yet whose stories continue to be written every time they return to the road.
Around it, Timeless Classics will once again bring together a carefully selected collection of classic and sports cars chosen for their history, character and the emotions they create. Cars made to be admired, certainly, but above all to be driven, heard and shared among enthusiasts.
Following the Miura, the Countach becomes the new guiding theme of a day conceived as a living celebration of the automobile. An opportunity to discover it from different perspectives, to see it alongside other icons and to share the road with those driven by the same passion.
